Informal and formal e- recycling: The scenario of e-waste in India

Monday 12 June 2017

The report of GISWatch 2010 states that the fastest growing sector in India is the electronic sector that has a massive consumer base of 52 million. Within seven years of the gap from 1993 to 2000, the number of PC owner upsurge to 604%. As a result of which by now, India has produced nearly 18.5 lakh tones of e-waste in 2016.

Apart from that, a majority of e-wastes are also getting dumped to India illegally from other countries. As of now, the informal e-waste recycler takes up to 90% of the total country’s e-waste, making space for newer e-waste policy. Being a hub of software companies the need of Scrap recycling industries in Bangalore has gone primary.

Issues regarding e-waste dump
The current legislation states the role of formal e-waste recyclers, but it doesn’t give any final work frame. The policy only covers the production and trade of electronic goods but doesn’t include the final disposal of the e-waste.
It is still an element of concern when it comes to disposing of the e-waste as a consumer doesn’t have any idea where to go and discard such electronic garbage. Even, most of the people in the capital of India, Delhi, don't have the notion regarding e-waste and its effect on the environment; we can't expect them to search for trash bins by themselves. Therefore Scrap recycling industries in Delhi are now trying to educate people on this.

It will be illogical to expect from electronic vendors to keep the record of each and every appliance they sold to consumers. As the unorganized market in India takes up a large section in Marketplace.

The process of informal e-recycling
The current issue of e-waste management is revolving around the theme of an effective method to recycle the e-wastes. We don’t see any electronic pile up in trash cans or public areas. There are people from informal sector who collect those used goods from visiting each and every home. They extract whatever they want and burn the rest in open air, which is hazardous.
Without knowing any proper technique to discard them, they break open the waste in any possible way and extract the requisite parts. They are unaware of the hazardous effect that it can put on environment. Without any knowledge how to handle the harsh chemicals, they are risking the life of human kind.

The Solution
The only method to increase the volume of safe-discarded e-waste is to create a connection between formal and informal e-recyclers. The informal recyclers should collect e-scraps from houses as they do and sold them to formal recycling centers.
Such step allows the formal recyclers to recycle the waste properly. This will also solve the problem of collecting of e-waste from everyone rather than being dependent on consumers to discard them in e-waste bins.

In this regard, Virogreen India deals with the collection, recycle and making e-waste reusable for consumption. Our corporate office is at Chennai but we do operate all over India. Our service has brought the fame among other Scrap recycling industries in Tamilnadu.
